U.S. News & World Report Quotes Matheu Nunn on Financial Tips for Second Marriages

October 8, 2024

Matheu D. NunnMatheu D. Nunn, co-chair of Einhorn Barbarito’s Family/Matrimonial and Appellate practices, was quoted in an article in U.S. News & World Report titled “Saying ‘I Do’ for the Second Time?” The article, published August 13, discussed some key financial moves for both individuals and couples to consider before taking a second trip down the aisle.

Nunn said that all couples, even those without significant assets, should consider a prenuptial agreement.

“It’s not just what you have when you get married,” said Nunn.

Nunn explained that prenups can be written to protect future income and other assets, such as an inheritance, as well as spell out provisions for alimony. But they can’t be used to negotiate child support and custody.

“People think they’re easy to set aside. They’re not easy to set aside. They’re contracts,” Nunn said.

He added that individuals, especially those with children, should consider an updated estate plan. He said that without a will, assets could fall to the spouse and there is no guarantee that they will share those funds. He said that even if there is no indication of friction between family members, a good estate plan can help “children feel comfortable that they aren’t going to be disinherited.”
