Matheu Nunn, Linda Torosian Co-Author New Jersey Law Journal Article “Parental Alienation: Psychological ‘Syndrome’ or ‘Junk Science’?”

November 29, 2023

The New Jersey Law Journal published “Parental Alienation: Psychological ‘Syndrome’ or ‘Junk Science’?” co-authored by Einhorn Barbarito partner Matheu D. Nunn, Einhorn Barbarito associate Linda Torosian, and attorney Alyssa S. Engleberg.

According to the authors, the term “parental alienation” is used quite frequently by spouses in divorce proceedings. While it is a serious allegation that can have a significant impact on the case, the authors write it’s not often present. The article explores the three schools of thought on parental alienation: the “true believers” who say that parental alienation is a condition; those who believe that parental alienation exists in a larger construct of the “best interests” factors; and the detractors who claim it is junk science. The authors provide examples and symptoms of each camp and describe how they have been used in marital litigation and interpreted by the courts.

Nunn serves as co-chair of Einhorn Barbarito’s Family/Matrimonial Practice and Appellate Practice and represents individuals from all fields – including athletes, business owners, entertainers, executives, lawyers, physicians, police officers and teachers – in family law matters.

Torosian handles the full range of family law matters including complex litigation involving significant assets, business evaluations, and high conflict custody and visitation issues. Additionally, she focuses her practice on the legal needs of the LGBTQ community, including same sex adoptions, and issues related to the dissolution of a same sex marriage.
