Matthew S. Rheingold, co-chair of Einhorn Barbarito’s Wills, Trusts & Estates and Taxation practices, was quoted in an article in SuperMoney titled “Is a Tax Debt Lawyer Worth It?” The article discusses various scenarios with the Internal Revenue Service where a tax attorney could enhance the chances of a favorable outcome. Although a taxpayer has the legal right to represent themself in dealings with the IRS, it is not always advisable.
In particular, the editors recommend hiring a tax attorney when undergoing an IRS audit, when negotiating a settlement with the IRS, and when notified of impending charges by the IRS, among other situations.
Rheingold says that taxpayers should select an attorney who has significant experience handling IRS disputes, including audits, litigation and appeals. “If applicable, the attorney can help you negotiate an offer in compromise, abate or remove penalties, set up installment agreements, or protect your assets from collection actions.”
