Jhanice Domingo Named 2013 New Leader of the Bar by New Jersey Law JournalAugust 12, 2013
On July 29, 2013, the New Jersey Law Journal (NJLJ) announced Einhorn Barbarito Counsel Jhanice V. Domingo, Esq., as one of 50 New Jersey attorneys under age 40 selected for the 2013 New Leaders of the Bar Award. Ms. Domingo will be honored at the “New Leaders of the Bar” Awards Reception on September 26, 2013, at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, NJ.
Each year, the NJLJ compiles a list of promising young professionals in New Jersey’s legal community. NJLJ Editor-in-Chief Ronald J. Fleury noted that the 50 lawyers chosen this year “are those that we decided — after a rigorous evaluation process — make up potent combinations of youthful exuberance and formidable accomplishment.” The criteria for selection of the standout lawyers named as “2013 New Leaders of the Bar” include development of practice niches, demonstrated leadership qualities, expertise in litigation, commitment to pro bono and charitable volunteer work, and other factors that distinguish an individual among his or her peers.
Ms. Domingo joined Einhorn Barbarito’ Matrimonial Law Department more than seven years ago in June 2006. In January 2012, at age 34, she was promoted from associate to Counsel. Ms. Domingo handles a wide variety of family law matters including divorce, child custody, alimony, child support, equitable distribution, palimony, prenuptial agreements, post-nuptial agreements, civil unions, domestic violence, etc. Patricia M. Barbarito, Esq., Einhorn Barbarito’ Managing Partner and Chair of the Matrimonial Law Department, stated, “Through the years, Ms. Domingo has handled high-asset divorce matters in various counties around the state. She has adeptly represented physicians, attorneys, high level business executives and other professionals — divorce cases which have involved complicated business valuations, complex analysis of executive compensations, financial forensic evaluations, etc.”
Beyond her day-to-day commitments to the firm, Ms. Domingo is actively involved with bar activities in which she has distinguished herself, especially with the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey (APALA-NJ) — the largest specialty bar association in New Jersey which collectively represents the interests of Asian Pacific American (APA) attorneys in the state. Ms. Domingo has served on the Executive Board of APALA-NJ for three years as Treasurer, Vice President and President-Elect. She is the incoming President of APALA-NJ for 2014-2015. Ms. Domingo is also the Co-Chair of APALA-NJ’s Judicial & Prosecutorial Appointments Committee (JPAC) and leads a committee comprised of attorneys committed to promoting diversity in the judiciary and in the state and federal government, and raising awareness in the courts of New Jersey about concerns of the APA community. As Co-Chair of APALA-NJ’s JPAC, Ms. Domingo works closely with New Jersey’s elected officials to identify highly qualified minority candidates.
Ms. Domingo, who is Filipino-American, has been a staunch advocate of diversity initiatives within New Jersey’s legal profession and was recently appointed to be a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) Diversity Committee. In addition to her work with APALA-NJ and the NJSBA, Ms. Domingo is an attorney-volunteer for Citizenship Rutgers, which provides free naturalization application assistance to legal permanent residents of New Jersey, as well as for the Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) Pro-Bono Program, which represents DACA-eligible youth in completing DACA applications.
Stephen P. Haller, Esq., a Partner with Einhorn Barbarito, noted, “Ms. Domingo exhibits a rare and valuable combination of youthful enthusiasm coupled with sagacious reasoning in her professional endeavors. She balances professional dedication (to her clients and the practice of law as well as her numerous bar activities) and her family life with a grace and aplomb that few attorneys are able to accomplish.” Ms. Domingo’s professional accomplishments, various leadership roles in bar associations, and volunteer work have earned her the distinction as a “New Leader of the Bar”. She has also earned other awards this year including being selected as one of 100 early- to mid-career minority attorneys for Lawyers of Color’s Inaugural 2013 Eastern Region Hot List. Ms. Domingo has also been selected as a 2013 Rising Star by New Jersey Super Lawyers publication, and by Martindale Hubbell for its 2013 Bar Register of Preeminent Women Lawyers, an honor exclusively for women attorneys who have received the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards from their peers.
